Ideas for Teachers

Activities To Do In and Out of Class

Talk to the Author

After possibly assigning this book as a summer read, an idea for an activity to do at the beginning of the school year (straight out of summer) is to arrange a meeting with the author! Students may create questions about the book and submit them to you so that you can check it. Then, after contacting the author and perhaps getting a response, your students can ask their questions directly to the author, making this a fun and engaging activity that will motivate students to actually complete the reading assignment.

Submit a Review

As an extra credit activity, you could ask students to create their own review and analysis of a book they have read and believe would be appropriate for schools. After following the review structure explained on the website, your student could submit their review to my email and if it checks all of our boxes, it can get published!

Project Idea

After reading the book, you could assign a class project that could be fun to do and engaging! An idea for a project is for each student to pick a character from the book and do a visual project that represents the many aspects of the character and how the author portrays them. This could vary from a poster where each photo has a specific meaning or an abstract 3D model. The students could then submit a written blurb with a short explanation of how their presentation represents the character and present it to the class.

Email Format for Contacting Author

Dear_____(name of author),

My name is ______ (your name) and I'm a teacher at _______ (name of your school). This summer I assigned your book ______(name of book) as a summer read for our class. Since classes are starting again soon, I asked the students to come up with questions they would ask the author of the book if they had the opportunity to. To make this activity even more exciting, I was wondering if you could find a time in your schedule to possibly meet online so that the students can ask you their questions directly!

Thank you! Hopefully, we'll see you soon.

Warm regards,

________(your name)
